Why are brain teasers great for your brain and how can they help you learn English?

You’ve probably heard about the benefits of brain teasers, but have you ever thought about how they could improve your English?

What are brain teasers?

Brain teasers are various logical puzzles, problems, or challenges that stimulate your brain and require creative thinking. These activities are often not just about quickly solving a problem, but also about thinking about things from a different perspective. They can range from simple riddles to complex logical problems, helping us improve our ability to analyze, think critically, and react quickly to new information.

For example: How can 8 + 8 = 4? (The answer is at the end of the post).

Activate your brain before learning

We all know that learning new skills requires the right mindset. Imagine you’re about to start learning English – before you dive in, it’s useful to “wake up” your brain and get it ready to absorb new information. And brain teasers can help with that.

These little challenges are not only fun, but they also have many benefits for your brain and learning. They help activate your mind and put it in a state of curiosity and openness to new information. Research shows that brain teasers improve cognitive functions, boost creativity, and promote "out-of-the-box thinking," which is exactly what we need when learning a foreign language.

Brain teasers and learning English

If you're learning English, brain teasers in English can be very useful for expanding your vocabulary and learning new phrases. When solving puzzles in English, you’re not only stimulating your brain, but you're also encountering new phrases, idioms, or grammatical structures that will enrich your language skills. The best part is that this happens effortlessly – you might not even realize you’re learning. By keeping your brain curious (you want to crack that puzzle!), you’ll remember much more, even unconsciously.

Brain teasers for teachers

For teachers, brain teasers are an ideal tool to get students in the right mindset at the beginning of a class. Short puzzles kick-start their brains and get them into a state of curiosity and readiness to learn.

Brain teasers can also be an effective break (a so-called "brain break") during lessons, especially with tougher grammar topics or when students start to feel a bit drained. When they’re tired or concentration is fading, a quick challenge can help re-engage them. This way, we reduce fatigue and tension and improve focus.

Brain teasers for parents

If you’re a parent, you know that kids love challenges and puzzles that give them a chance to feel successful. They’re a great way to motivate them and stimulate their brains while learning new things, including languages. Plus, they develop children's creativity, mental flexibility, and problem-solving skills.

Solving brain teasers together can be a great way to bridge the gap before homework or tap into curiosity and competitiveness to our advantage. They help kids maintain focus and motivation.

Fun is the key – give it a try!

Incorporating brain teasers into your daily routine has a positive impact on cognitive development for both kids and adults. Regularly solving puzzles is a great way to stay mentally fit, boost productivity, relieve stress, and learn new things, especially if you tie it to learning English or another foreign language.

That’s why I’ve decided to post a regular series of brain teaser videos on my social media that will give your brain a workout. Even if you don’t solve them all, no worries – at least you’ll have fun and learn something new.

Each video will be posted with the answer and an explanation in the description. Plus, I’ll always add something to help you with your English learning, like a grammar note, a phrase, or a creative exercise. That way, you’ll not only have fun but also improve your language skills. After all, every step, even the small ones, moves us forward.
